Questions and answers
How long is a game?
A run lasts up to ten in-game years, about an hour. A day passes every second, and the clock stops while you make a decision.
How do I win?
Reach AGI first, with a model that’s on your side. Only agents can become AGI: the first lab with an agent at 3,000 Intelligence gets there. If it has at least 95% Security and P(doom) is under 60%, it’s aligned. If nobody reaches AGI in ten years, the decade ends and your run is scored on where you stand.
What is P(doom)?
The chance your AI ends everything. Every live model with low Security pushes it up every week, and so do reckless rivals and some of your choices. Security engineers bring it down between projects, and patching or retiring unsafe models helps. At 100%, the run is over.
How do I pause?
Tap ≡ in the top-left corner. The menu pauses the game and has the music, sound and tips switches, the language, and Save & quit.
Is my game saved?
Yes, automatically, on your device: every in-game week, at every decision and whenever you leave the app. Continue on the title screen picks up where you left off, and starting a new game replaces the saved one. If a save ever can’t be opened, the game keeps it instead of deleting it.
Does time pass while the app is closed?
No. The lab waits for you.
Can I play on my iPhone and my iPad?
Yes. Each device keeps its own saved game; saves don’t sync between devices.
How do I change the language?
Tap 🌐 on the title screen, or open ≡ during a game. Until you pick one, the game follows your device’s language, or the one set for AI Lab Race in Settings.
Can I see the tour again?
Yes. When you start a new game, switch on Show me around on the title screen. Tips appear once each, and ≡ turns them off or back on.
Does it need an internet connection?
No. It plays offline, with no ads, no in-app purchases and no account.
Tips from the lab

- Researchers and racks decide the race. Safety decides the ending.
- Every live model with low Security adds to P(doom) every week. Patch or retire them.
- Agents need far more Security than chatbots: grow the security team before you switch.
- Ship something before payroll runs out: the first launch pays the bills.
- Containment engineers are the lasting fix. Contractors and lockdowns only buy time.
